Ryerson University’s REAL Institute commissioned Kal Mansur to create sculptures that respond to a changing Canadian landscape.
Mansur created a series of abstracted Canadian icons and symbols — a goose, a hockey stick, a whale, a totem, and the like — which are overlaid upon photographic wall coverings of the Canadian wilderness.
This work is about the optimism of learning a new language.
The pieces were installed in a grid structure, like an alphabet. Mansur named the series Coda — the word for a concluding passage of a piece of music.
The pieces are executed in clear and coloured acrylic. Mansur created 100 sculptures that span 150 linear feet of wall space.
The work celebrates Canada's multiculturalism while providing a warm and welcoming space for international students to learn English.
